Writing 102 Friday Evening Class
Exercise for Friday Evening Class:
Convert MLA citations to APA.
First the instructor will go over differences in MLA and APA.
The instructor will provide you with a citation sheet in MLA. Using the materials provided for you, as well as your text, re-write the citations as APA.
Print out two copies: one for the instructor and one for you for your files.
You will be provided with a copy to check against when you return to the classroom.
In addition, you must convert several in-text citations to APA. Change citations on several pages of your paper to APA. Add this to the above Works Cited/References and turn it in.
If you are unable to complete this assignment in the time allowed, you may finish it and email it to the instructor by Monday.

We had poetry roundtables conducted by Kedza, Khalil, and Estaban.
We did an exercise that required converting an MLA Works Cited page to an APA References page.

Advertising 3100 What Happened in Class
The instructor handed out the final assignment: outdoor or graphic display. We watched a .ppt which featured outdoor and graphic displays. This .ppt is posted at Blackboard. Students were asked to identify the Unique Selling Proposition for each of the ads.
We talked about the Account Management section of the class, where students contact a potential advertiser for The Tower.
Next we worked on radio scripts. The instructor showed a comparison of ads. She stressed repetition, getting the benefits up front early in the ad, and concrete, specific benefits.

First we discussed the Tower newspaper project. The instructor showed students the coupons and the flyer. There was some discussion as to whether advertisers in the immediate vicinity of Kean would receive a benefit from the break coupons. It was pointed out that the school is largely commuter oriented. The instructor suggested to students that they choose clients who will benefit ffrom students being out of school and who might not necessarily be in the immediate vicinity of the school. In some cases, students may want to suggest a newspaper ad rather than the coupon.
Students were provided with items to add to their media kit: the flyer featuring the coupon, the coupon layout sheet, and a copy of The Tower.
It was decided that Part A would be due on Dec. 9. This means the student must have contacted the client before the next class.
Next the instructor told students about the radio ad. She showed them the assignment sheet (later a hard copy was distributed). She showed them how to set up the script page on the computer. In addition, there was a handout describing situations, formats, and emotional appeals. The instructor went over the handout in class.
After the break, we went over the deadlines for the rest of the class.

a) the instructor said the best way is to get out the style guide and do the conversions by hand
b) we explored the Microsoft Word capabilities. Ashley showed the group how the citations are generated after all the sources have been entered (by doing internal citations)
c) the instructor showed NoodleTools.
Monroe's Motivated Sequence
We worked on the visualization step. Laura volunteered to put her visualization step on the screen and the class read it. We looked for ways to make it more effective.

3960 Adv What Happened in Class
We worked as a problem-solving and creative review group today. Everyone sat in a circle and the instructor passed out a rough draft of the flyer that will be used to promote the winter coupon special. We decided on a flyer color (blue) and changed the heading to reflect the origins of the flyer (Kean/TheTower). We edited some of the content.
What needs to be done next is to make a template of the coupon. The instructor is to make revisions and send it to the students.

We went to the lab and worked on sections of the persuasive speech. Specifically, we worked on how to make the problem a problem for our audience. Students signed "contracts" agreeing to use the Monroe Motivated Sequence outline.

• Put out too much pollution pollution (a person can drive a car from NJ to Indianapolis and put out less pollution than one leafblower in 20 minutes)
• Are too noisy. Leafblowers put out 160-190 dBA while lawnmowers only put out 95 dBA
• Stir up chromium and other toxins put out by automobiles, put it into the air where we breath it. One study conducted by the American Lung Association examined types of materials or toxins found in street dust. Found among the particulates examined were traces of arsenic, cadmium, chromium, nickel, and mercury.

If we ban leafblowers, our mornings will not be disturbed with loud noise. We can leave our house windows open on Indian summer days in the fall.
There will be no more piles of leaves at the curb to cause traffic congestion and accidents.

We exchanged research papers and the instructor asked each person to check certain items such as margins, headings, internal text citations, etc. After this review, each student read and scored the paper according to a sheet handed out by the instructor. Students then conferred with each other on the paper remarks.
The instructor showed students a research paper assignment from another instructor. She pointed out how the instructor for this assignment stressed following the same style formatting that is being taught in this class.
Fernanda conducted her poetry roundtable on William Blake's "London," (abecedarian).
Jerson started his on Dante but we ran out of time.

Writing 102 Saturday What Happened in Class
The instructor showed students metaphors for punctuation. We have already covered one metaphor, which is the colon (The Magician). Continuing work with punctuation, we covered the apostrophe. The instructor showed a Powerpoint on the apostrophe and students did exercises along with it. The exercises were turned in at the conclusion of class.
Students came prepared for their peer readings of the research paper but because we were concerned about time, we proceeded immediately to the poetry roundtable. Were were able to fit in three of four readings: Natalia, Mark, and Lilliana.
Students for this coming Saturday's discussions can give the instructor materials to be photocopied at the beginning of class: the poem, the background of the poet/how the poet fits into the genre, and the explication (meaning) of the poem. Next we went through Lukeman's punctuation metaphors. After that, we worked on use of the apostrophe. We watched a Powerpoint and students did exercises based on each of the rules discussed. The exercises were handed in at the conclusion of class.
We did a poetry roundtable discussion and Liddia presented a poem by Elizabeth Bishop (villanelle).

Next we went through Lukeman's punctuation metaphors. After that, we worked on use of the apostrophe. We watched a Powerpoint and students did exercises based on each of the rules discussed. The exercises were handed in at the conclusion of class.
We did a poetry roundtable discussion and Liddia presented a poem by Elizabeth Bishop (villanelle).

Program Where Employer Pays Tuition
I thought this article might interest some of my students. The program is operating here in NJ.
Writing 102 Thursday Night
Students gave their conclusions to another student for a reading. The instructor put Lester p. 124 on the overhead projector and we discussed the steps in the conclusion.
The instructor asked students to put the paper together for scoring next week. The intro and conclusion should be added to the three main points, which already have transitions written in. Not only will we do scoring next week, we will write a title and subtitles.
We looked at punctuation metaphors and then worked on the apostrophe. Students handed in their worksheets for apostrophe.
Next we had two poetry presentations (Scott & supposed to be Estaban, who was not in class.) Fortunately Rosanna was ready for her presentation and substituted for Estaban. Scott told us about the sonnet and Rosanaa discussed lyrical poetry.
We were unable to complete this part of the class but will continue next week on poetry slams. Also, we will read Rosanna's two papers.

Advertising 3100 What Happened in Class
First we had a quiz on the previous week's film, which was Helvetica. We corrected the questions in class and later the instructor discussed the importance of various points, such as why corporations like this font.
Next we watched went through the major points of
Chapter 9 (on media buying). The instructor explained that advertisers tell the buyer how much money there is to spend and how many gross rating points must be purchased for that amount.
After going through the highlights of media planning, buying, and strategy, the instructor showed students the SRDS web site and asked them to look through the auditing sites.
We took a short break. After the break, we had a quiz on terms used in search engine advertising (Google ad words). The quizzes were corrected in class.
The instructor explained there would be a Powerpoint on Google AdWords next week and students would write a three-line Google ad for their assignment that week.

The instructor handed back papers and went through her grade sheet of what she has and does not have from students.
She returned youtube assignments and told students what they needed to do to revise them for final form in the portfolio. Students turned up a number of ideas from the research part of this assignment and were asked to forward their links for posting:

Writing 102 Thursday What Happened in Class
Research paper scoring sheets were distributed and each student received three. They were labeled: "instructor (one-sided scoring sheet) and "peer reading" and "self-evaluation" for the two-sided scoring sheets.
Students turned in their drama paper finals.
The instructor talked about transitions and students selected from a list of transitions displayed on the overhead projector. The transitions were written in on the rough draft of the research paper. At the conclusion of this exercise, the instructor asked students to hand in their introduction. The rough draft with transitions was to be labeled "transitions written in on Nov. 5." The rough draft is turned in with the research paper.
Next students took the drama quiz. We corrected the quizzes in class.
Erin and Susan read their poems and we read the explications and genre papers in class. We discussed the poems.

Advertising 3960
We chose the trade magazines for our youtube video. The idea behind the research is to possibly add to our one-page written concept that is targeted to our client, and to also learn what the marketing community is saying about youtube advertising promotion.
We discussed the assignment and to whom it is targeted.
We discussed the test system and students gave feedback on the paper test. It was decided we will proceed with the T/F questions for future chapters. We may possibly substitute some questions from the end of the chapter for variation.
The instructor returned papers with grades (newspaper, long sales letter).
Students agreed to have their two surveys together and ready for a grade by next Monday, Nov. 9.
To Do For Next Class:

Next the instructor went over the poetry assignment. She showed sources for some of the multimedia aspects of the assignment, such as Yahoo's mp3 search and poetry reading mp3s at LION.
We put student genre selections on an open document. This part of the class was administered by the students.

We watched a video on the funnel opening and the instructor will send students the worksheet that accompanies it. She will also include the link to the poetry genre choices.

Adv. 3100 What Happened in Class
We first talked about the portfolio and what had to be done to get the items into the most presentable, attractive form. The instructor asked students to put their market research form in a word doc and use the square box for the check mark area. This should be followed by a printout of the surveymonkey.com questionnaire.
The instructor returned the long sales letter outlines and gave students time to review her comments.
She then presented the assignment for the youtube video. The assignment was read in class and students were asked to note two text references on the assignment sheet: Arens, page 431 for the concept of storyboard and 432 for the video comp. Students were then shown examples of storyboards.
Students are obtaining youtube articles from the trade publications to a) see what the trade press is finding about this advertising medium and b) for possible information and ideas that will support our argument for the concept to our client. Trade publications/areas are listed at the end of this post.
Students discussed deadline dates. The due dates are posted on the calendar (see calendar link at left).
After the break, the instructor handed out a sample test. We are resuming readings in the Arens text and are working on Ch. 8. Students will take their first online test this week. The paper copy of the test was given to help students move into this new activity. The instructor recommended the students do the paper copy of the test as soon as possible so they are ready to take the test when she emails the link toward the weekend.

Writing 102 Saturday What Happened in Class
First we covered the poetry assignment. Each student chose a genre. We chose dates for the poetry readings. Presentation dates are at the end of this post.
The instructor showed the class the exercise and worksheet for next week when we write the intro. She asked students to bring their three points with the third point on top and the other two with corrections on the bottom. We will write the intros in class and the instructor will make copies so students can begin editing them into the paper, which is nearing completion.
The instructor will book a computer lab and students should go directly to the lab. The instructor will email the room number. We will work on the poetry presentation and the intro in the lab.
We finished the Powerpoint and worksheet on usage of the colon. Students were asked to work some of the various uses they learned into their research papers.
The instructor went over some of the items that will be on the drama quiz next week.
Point 2 was returned and the instructor went over revision symbols.
The grading sheet was distributed.

Writing 102 Friday What Happened in Class
First we went through common errors. The instructor put up examples of some errors from student papers on the doc cam.
The instructor returned the papers of the three points of the research paper that the students have written to date.
Next we went through revision symbols. We located the revision symbols in Hacker and saw how the boldfaced number referred to the section in the text that showed how to correct the error.
The instructor gave the general rules for corrections:
1) The instructor marks only the first error. Students must go through the paper for each error and correct all the others.
2) All corrections given to the student must be made before handing the paper in the next time. The instructor has the option of deducting one letter grade from the paper if corrections are not made.
Next we started work on introductions. We watched a video on how to write the funnel opening and the instructor handed out an accompanying worksheet. We wrote the introduction in class and the instructor kept one copy and gave students back the original.
After the break, the instructor collected the final versions of the drama paper.
The instructor discussed the poetry assignment and went over how students could find an .mp3 of their poet doing a reading on the LION database or through a Yahoo .mp3 search. The search term that was used as an example was "Robert Frost .mp3" and this yielded 1.7 million mp.3s.
We did not have time to finish the colon worksheet, so bring it to the next class and we will finish it then.
A few students requested clarification on what needed to be done for Langan chapters. The instructor told them "everything." This includes the tests. The only thing that does not need to be done is when there are multiple essay questions. Then the student should do only one of the essays.

Writing 102 Thursday Night
First we worked through a PowerPoint on the colon. The instructor showed examples of sentences using the colon in different ways. Then students practiced by writing their own sentences. We put examples of student work on the overhead doc cam.
Next we went over the poetry assignment. We chose dates for student presentations. Susan and Erin will be presenting on Nov. 5. We will put in the remainder of the presentation dates next week. Students are to also select their poetry genre by next week.
We went through a Powerpoint on the Greek theater.

Advertising 3100 What Happened in Class
In the first half of the class, we looked at the long sales letters. One was an example of a student's work and the other examples were from the Kennedy book. After this discussion, the instructor collected the students' sales letter outlines. Prior to collecting them, however, each person critiqued a colleague's letter based on what they learned from the instructor's discussion.
Students also turned in their final market research questionnaires for a grade.
The instructor returned newspaper ads with comments. The ads are to be finished and turned in for a final grade next week.
The instructor passed out the three-ring binders for making the portfolio.
In the second half of the class, we studied the Unique Selling Proposition. The instructor went through a Powerpoint and the students had a worksheet that helped them write a USP. After doing the worksheet, the instructor made copies so the student could work from the USP for ongoing projects.

She ranked me as “emotional,” while no other people I interviewed did. In fact, “emotional“ was halfway down the list of characteristics for my other three interviews. This difference might be accounted for by what Seiler and Beall call “perceptual sets.” They say that a perceptual set is a form of stereotyping (40).

The instructor discussed Greek theater. She also talked about what was going to be on the quiz in two weeks (Oct. 30).
Next she discussed the creativity component of research paper. Some ways to achieve this component were outlined:
-surveys
-ethnographic research (dancer example)
Creative point of view (Freakonomics example)
The instructor returned drama papers and picked up Pt 3, which will be returned at the next class

Teaching Experience with Dimensions
Occasionally I will write a post about my experiences with teaching.
Last night my students from a night class had the assignment of going to a play.
While the students went to the performance, I read their research paper drafts. I hadone student to whom I had suggested the topic of how play develops certain characteristics in children, such as cooperation with others, self-regulation, organizational skills, etc.
I got her started in the research with a story that had run on NPR. Last night she had six
pages for me to read, and an Annotated Works Cited. So far she has done a wonderful job of turning up sources and is doing well on the paper.
The place where the play was being performed is is next to what is called The Atrium, a large commons with a sunken area almost like an amphitheater. There are tables around the edge, interspersed with tall palm trees. I set up shop across the amphitheater and began correcting papers.
Not long after I began my work, a group of dozen young guys arrived with their boom box. They went into the sunken area. They put on some music, rolled out a large mat, and began dancing. They were amazing to watch. What agility. What smoothness to such complicated moves. They could do things like spin around on one hand with their feet in the air, their body shaped like a crescent. They did handstands, somersaults, and moves I can't even find words to describe.
Some of them were better than the others. The ones I particularly liked had a sort of connectedness to their moves that made me think of a marionnette. They would step in and out at random, practicing a particular maneuver, then stepping back to give another dancer a chance on the mat. Sometimes they would twirl around outside the map.
Now, mind you, I was watching this unfold while I read my student's paper on the role of play in maturation, so in effect, the research paper was coming to life before my eyes. As I read the paper, I could see it happening, right in front of me. As these were young adults, I could see the mature "end result."
Of course, as a communications teacher, the "play on words" did not escape me. While my students were at the play, I was reading a paper about play and I was watching play in action.

Writing 102 Thursday Night: Important
Because of the bad weather and the traffic conditions, I am revising our meeting time to be a little later. Come at 7:40 and go directly to the atrium, across from the cafeteria. That is where the play entrance is.

Advertising 3100 Wed. night What Happened in Class
The instructor and the class set up an email texting system in case of bad weather, storm, or other type of delay or cancellation of the class. Cory is the contact (Aura is the backup) and the instructor will call her and Cory or Aura will text the rest of the class. The instructor will also post on the blog and students may check that before class, too.
Instructor asked class about the Kennedy book and few students had read the assignment because they don’t have the book. One student said he had ordered this book for $9 online. It is imperative to get the book immediately because all writing for the portfolio must be roughed out in October.
Binders: Correct the questionnaire and put it in the binder.. In addition students should get as many as possible to take the questionnaire.

We saw the play. After the play, the instructor asked the students to write their first draft tomorrow morning while the play was still fresh in their mind. One student mentioned that Ruby Sunrise might be on youtube.
While the students were at the play, the instructor read their Point 1, which was handed in at the beginning of class. The papers were returned with corrections and the instructor asked students to do the following:
a) write two pages of description of what their paper is about. For example, if the paper is about healthcare system, the student should describe in details employer group healthcare, individually purchased policies, Medicare, and Medicaid.
b) continue writing the paper, this time Point 2
c) Prepare for Langan check in in two weeks (Oct. 24). Eleven chapters should be done by the 24th.
d) Read the next chapter in Lester (six, I believe).

Advertising 3100 What Happened in Class Wed., Oct 7
The instructor asked students if they had read the graphics file formats handout and then we went through the formats. The instructor used a PowerPoint and students were put into pairs to do pair summaries. We broke at regular intervals for students to summarize what they had learned.
Next the instructor collected the half-page newspaper ad summaries.
Questionnaires were turned in and the instructor will review them and return them with comments. Students were reminded that the market research piece is part of the portfolio and that they should get a three-ring notebook to start organizing the portfolio.
We watched the first part of a DVD that is included with the text.

Be sure you've read Arens 1-5 and Ch. 12, which has to do with newspaper ads. You will need this information to progress on your ad.

We set up an instant texting plan for the class in case of bad weather or in the event the instructor has trouble getting a parking space. The instructor will phone Tasneem or Nicole (backup) and they will convey the message to the rest of the class.
Next we worked on topics for the informative speech. Students were divided into groups and they brainstormed about areas they wanted to learn more about. Then we recorded the topics at this link . Students can continue to add topics if they think of more later. The instructor showed students a list of additional topics and she went over them. Students are to come to Thursday's class with their topic selection.
The instructor handed back the student copy of the group symposium. A few students did not get theirs: Erica, Sal, Nicole, Ashley, Aajjaa, and Shayyine. They will be returned at the next class session.
After we chose topics, the instructor put the "I Am" journal assignment up on the overhead projector and we went over it. Links to this assignment will be posted here later.

Writing 102 Saturday What Happened in Class
We are meeting at Cranford to attend the play for the next class. Show up by 7:30 p.m. and go to Rm. N24. There will be no Saturday morning class. Note: this was changed in class to students should all meet at the atrium at 7:45.
Read the drama handout before coming to class. Also read all the drama terms at the drama glossary. Also, read the paper emailed to you (paper by Camilla).
Rough draft of the drama paper is to be completed by the following Saturday, October 17. Peer reading on the 17th, make corrections and return on the 24th.
Tip. While watching the play, record the chronology:

Writing 102 Thursday What Happened in Class
We discussed the theatre paper, which is due one week after we attend the theatre performance (Oct. 22). The assignment sheet is posted at the Student Links page.
After reading the assignment, we voted on what night to see the play. The class decided on seeing the play October 15. We will meet at 7 because the play will go about 80" longer than the class time. We will meet in the regular classroom first and go over to the play 45" later.
Next we did the critical thinking quiz on Fox News. The quiz doesn't count on the grade but it served as a way to discuss some of the concepts introduced by the DVD. In addition, it showed students what type of questions the instructors asks on quizzes. It also shows the protocol for how we grade papers in class.
After the quiz, we went around the room and students read their working thesis statement.
We went into peer group reading sessions for Point One. Students who did not have their paper have to write a total of four pages next week. We will probably do peer readings again next week. The instructor will return Point One next week.
The last item on the agenda was to correct the Annotated Works Cited page.

Advertising 3100 What Happened in Class
We went over the questionnaire. Since the instructor had been ill, students were given an extra week. Fred volunteered to put his questionnaire on the overhead projector. The instructor critiqued it.
The instructor handed out a newspaper advertising assignment sheet. We read it on the overhead projector in class.
We went through the narrated slides for Chapter 2. Then students were put in pairs and the instructor gave them questions to answer.
The instructor handed out a digital file handout and asked students to read it for next week. They are to note the specifications for their own camera on the margins of the handout. There will be a PowerPoint next week on this topic and reading the handout will make it easier to understand. This information is important for students to know so they can produce a newspaper ad with the correct resolution required by the printing industry.
Next week:
a) Bring questionnaire for instructor to critique. Post at Blackboard.
b) Read Ch. 12 instead of the designated chapter on the reading schedule for the coming week.
c) Read the digital file handout

For any students looking for a p-t job, I noticed that the new Trader Joe's in Millburn has a sign out saying they are hiring. This is just off Vaux Hall Road by the CVS Pharmacy. It is in a shopping center previously occupied by Whole Foods. I think there is also going to be a Petco there. I believe I've read that Trader Joe's has won awards for their employee policies.

After the presentations, the instructor left the classroom while the class discussed whether they wanted to do tests or outlines. The instructor explained how each concept would work, i.e., tests would be viewed as proof of reading; outlines would be the major point from each paragraph. Students decided to do outlines.
Chapters 1-3 do not have to be outlined as the students will prove they have read the chapters through their "I Am Journal" paper, which is upcoming. Students should immediately begin outlining the other chapters. The instructor announced there will be an outline check at next Thursday's class.

Practicing is a requirement for this speech. One does not have to practice with the group. For anyone repeating their presentation, two mp3s of individual practice sessions are required. These must be posted at Blackboard and the instructor must be advised of the posting by email.
Please be sure to save the Schedule of Activities and Assignments to your hard drive. It is located at BlackBoard. I will also send it out as an attachment, as a few students say they are still having technical issues with BlackBoard.

Next week we will be attending the play at 8 p.m. Students should convene, however, at our classroom at 7 p.m. Be sure to bring $10 and student ID for admission.
The instructor will bring an example of a paper written for the drama assignment.
We discussed topics and researching them. The instructor explained that it was OK to take on a source if what the student is seeing does not concur with the source.
We were supposed to learn how to do a personalized news page, where we get current research to come to us. We were also to discuss RSS feeds and information transmitted via e-mail. Unfortunately, our computer classroom that was reserved was locked. We will work on this at a future class.

Thurs 102 What Happened in Class
We met in the computer lab and the instructor showed students how to get material on their research topics sent to them. She discussed three methods of having the material gathered by either Google or Yahoo: a) personalized news page; b) reader (RSS); c) topics sent to e-mail address. Students were given a worksheet and asked to bring it to following classes, as we will be working on research techniques for awhile.
After the computer session, we went back to the classroom and watched a DVD about propaganda sources in the news, specifically Fox News. The instructor announced that there will be a quiz on the DVD next week, but it is "open book," meaning students may use their notes.

Media 3100 Wed. Night Class Cancellation

I am coughing all the time and can hardly talk. I think I also have a fever.
I'm cancelling class because of this. I really hate to do it but I can't see how I could conduct much of a class.

Students had their worksheet filled out from the previous class's lecture. We went through the worksheet and discussed the questions.
Since the assignment was to write 10 questions and go on surveymonkey, the instructor handed out photocopies from the text to help students in writing the questions.
A trading area survey/zip code map was given to the class and each class member was asked to put their home zip code on it. This map will serve to illustrate the trading area survey at a future class.
Questions are due on the 30th but we will talk about them in the next class.

Friday 102 What Happened in Class
We corrected the Annotated Works Cited. The instructor handed out a guide. Each person corrected another student's paper and made a list of items that needed to be corrected, added to, or changed.
We also made a list of what is underlined and what is in quotes in MLA Works Cited:

Media 3100 What Happened in Class
We worked with the online chapter (7). First we talked about the Holiday Inn Express example from the book. Then the instructor talked about different types of research with which she has worked: social policy surveys, media research, ethnographic research, etc. We viewed online examples at juicingtheorange.com.
We learned about random samples and nonprobability samples. During the random sample discussion, we did a "minute paper."
We worked in pairs to fill out a research questionnaire and we went over the answers in class.
The instructor informed the class that she had activated the shell for Blackboard.
She made copies of pertinent pages from the text so students could get started on their questionnaire. Students filled out a zip code map and next week the instructor will show how it is similar to how a trading area survey works.
Next week:
Ten research questions. Be prepared to provide the instructor with a link and a printed out copy of the research questions. Post the questions before class at Blackboard.
In addition to reading Chapter 7, also read Chapter 1.

The Theater Project, Union County College’s Professional Theater Company, will present a staged reading of "Going to the Chapel" by Michael Z Murphy, directed by Louis Scarpati, on Saturday, September 19 at 3 PM. The presentation will be followed by a discussion with the playwright, director, actors and audience in the Union County College Students Commons,1033 Springfield Avenue, Cranford, NJ. Admission is free.
This reading is part of the Opening Night in the Afternoon series of original plays by members of The Theater Project’s Playwrights Development Workshop, led by Artistic Director Mark Spina. These script-in-hand performances offer the excitement and immediacy of actually sitting in on rehearsals with talented members of The Theater Project. The series continues on October 17.
Going to the Chapel consists of two one-act comedies of manners. Act I is called "All in Good Time" and Act II is "Remote Control." The plays pose the question: To marry or not and if so, how? The characters have multiple considerations, and of course, life intervenes. One British cleric must decide and one dead Jewish mama must manipulate her children. Crossed wires, crossing over and cross spirits --- two comedies of manners.
Michael Z Murphy (please note there is NO PERIOD after the Z), communication professor, poet, certified massage therapist, life member of the International Listening Association and someone who has lived a televisionless life for almost 23 years brings a unique, albeit whacked, angle to relationships. This Hillside resident's past life includes teaching speech and/or English in every grade from 6 to 12, selling hardware as well as stints as an industrial painter, movie usher, stage actor, stage manager and director. His favorite activity is cracking student brains with critical thinking. He once played in an African drum ensemble with Celeste Holm---Oh, yes he did!

Writing 102-Saturday What Happened in Class
There was some confusion over the classroom, but eventually we all ended up in a multimedia room, #514. First students did a writing sample. The writing sample was on a question the student has that has never been satisfactorily answered.
Next we went over the syllabus. Students were shown where the online version was (see link at left) and hard copies were also distributed. We read through the syllabus. While reading through the syllabus, the instructor showed the books.
We read through the process of writing the research paper on the schedule of activities and assignments (pp. 8-9 of the syllabus). We also covered the drama and poetry parts of the class.
The instructor gave students the assignments, which are detailed at the end of this entry.
We constructed an email list and each student entered their email address on the list.

The instructor introduced the assignment for the next week, which was an Annotated Works Cited. The sources gathered for this assignment should work toward the research paper. This means students must make a topic selection.
The instructor explained the nature of academic research and the difference between public libraries and academic libraries. She also talked about the
unique nature of libraries and librarians in NJ and why style documentation exists.
The class took a break and after the break we went into pairs to do "paired summaries" of the class thus far.
The instructor explained the process students will go through to construct the Annotated Works Cited:
1. Choose a topic
2. Keywords: general research on google.
3. Academic databases—begin accumulating sources.
4. Save sources to a folder
5. Read the sources and as you read them, make notes
6. Alphabetize the sources by the author’s last name
a. If no last name, use the name of the article
7. Identify what type of citation it is: is it book?
8. Write the citation the correct way by looking them up in your style guide(Hacker)
The instructor showed students where to go for the radio and TV sources (NPR and BBC for radio, public television (PBS) and BBC).
She also showed them the databases at the library and how to do searches on them. The magazine and newspaper sources, for example, must be done from Lexis Nexis.

Questions to answer in an Annotation
1. What was the specific format of the source? (Encyclopedia, interview, video, etc.)
2. Where and how did you find this source? (Public library, school media center online resources, home, Internet search, etc.)
3. What is the purpose of this source? (Educate, persuade, inform, entertain, etc.)
4. What is the content of the source? What topics are covered? In what amount of detail?
5. To whom is this information directed? Is there specialized and difficult language?
6. What are the credentials of the source? Is the author/publisher reliable? How do you know?
7. What information did you find that was important to your project/research?
8. What did you find difficult about this source?
Annotations could be descriptive or evaluative, or a combination of both. A descriptive annotation summarizes the scope and content of a work whereas an evaluative annotation provides critical comment.
