Advertising 3100 Wed. night What Happened in Class

The instructor and the class set up an email texting system in case of bad weather, storm, or other type of delay or cancellation of the class. Cory is the contact (Aura is the backup) and the instructor will call her and Cory or Aura will text the rest of the class. The instructor will also post on the blog and students may check that before class, too.

Instructor asked class about the Kennedy book and few students had read the assignment because they don’t have the book. One student said he had ordered this book for $9 online. It is imperative to get the book immediately because all writing for the portfolio must be roughed out in October.

Binders: Correct the questionnaire and put it in the binder.. In addition students should get as many as possible to take the questionnaire.

Newspaper ad: We went over student ideas for newspaper ads and the instructor showed how to make them more effective. We showed the ads on the overhead projector. Then we went to the lab and the instructor worked with students in writing and laying out the newspaper ad.

Write outline for the sales letter
Finish questionnaire and send out emails telling people to take the questionnaire. Final copy for grade. Hand in.
Put finishing touches on newspaper ad and have it ready to hand in next week for a grade. In some cases an extra week will be granted for this assignment.

Note to students: after class, some students suggested we do these ads in the Mac lab, so we will probably do that next or the following week.

Advertising 3100 What Happened in Class Wed., Oct 7

The instructor asked students if they had read the graphics file formats handout and then we went through the formats. The instructor used a PowerPoint and students were put into pairs to do pair summaries. We broke at regular intervals for students to summarize what they had learned.

Next the instructor collected the half-page newspaper ad summaries.

Questionnaires were turned in and the instructor will review them and return them with comments. Students were reminded that the market research piece is part of the portfolio and that they should get a three-ring notebook to start organizing the portfolio.

We watched the first part of a DVD that is included with the text.

Read Kennedy, pages 17-109
Be sure you've read Arens 1-5 and Ch. 12, which has to do with newspaper ads. You will need this information to progress on your ad.

Attn: Kean Advertising Students

I have been in touch again with the Kean IT/Blackboard staff and they have now figured out how to upload the tests. We are, however, going into a section of the class where we are writing and producing ads. I've asked them to get 5 & 6 up and then after October:

"...Nov 2, and then we need Ch. 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17 & 18."

Media 3100 Wed. Night Class Cancellation

Here is the email I sent the class:

I am coughing all the time and can hardly talk. I think I also have a fever.

I'm cancelling class because of this. I really hate to do it but I can't see how I could conduct much of a class.

I am putting a notice at the blog and I have also notified the department to put up a notice on the door.

Please check the blog later in the week for any notes about what work with which to continue.

Media 3100 What Happened in Class

We worked with the online chapter (7). First we talked about the Holiday Inn Express example from the book. Then the instructor talked about different types of research with which she has worked: social policy surveys, media research, ethnographic research, etc. We viewed online examples at juicingtheorange.com.

We learned about random samples and nonprobability samples. During the random sample discussion, we did a "minute paper."

We worked in pairs to fill out a research questionnaire and we went over the answers in class.

The instructor informed the class that she had activated the shell for Blackboard.

She made copies of pertinent pages from the text so students could get started on their questionnaire. Students filled out a zip code map and next week the instructor will show how it is similar to how a trading area survey works.

Next week:

Ten research questions. Be prepared to provide the instructor with a link and a printed out copy of the research questions. Post the questions before class at Blackboard.

In addition to reading Chapter 7, also read Chapter 1.
