 Thursday

This email was sent to the class at 8:30 a.m.:

I can make it to class; I just can’t talk. I thought we could do the Helvetica quiz and the class evaluation today. Don’t bring the box. We will do that next Tuesday.
Also, I don’t think I am contagious. I’ve had this thing since September and I understand a person is only contagious with it the first three or so days of the illness.

 Tuesday
Students should put their survey research link on the table at right under "Adv. Mkt. Research Presentation Dates."

In preparation for the TV commercial assignment, we will go over the assignment sheet. In addition, we will go through the Unique Selling Proposition. (.ppt plus worksheet).

We will cover "Features & Benefits" on Thursday.

The instructor handed out the evaluation sheet for the market research presentations which are coming up in April.

To do for next class:

Decide on a product or service for the TV commercial.

Bring a package from a consumer product for analysis of features and benefits for class on Thursday.

Social Advocacy

Thursday

Following is information that will help you adjust your letter to President Obama: Take only the essential parts and add it to your letter. Pull out your references to asking him not to sign it and ask him to do the part in red below.
-------------

I'm outraged that Congress allowed Section 735, the Monsanto Protection Act in a short-term spending bill and passed it and that you have now signed it into law. This is a deep betrayal of our most basic constitutional rights and by signing H.R. 933 without issuing a signing statement or taking other actions to block this provision you have allowed great harm to America's family farmers, our environment and our democracy.

In an effort to balance this violation of our basic rights, I am urging you as President to issue an Executive Order to require the mandatory labeling of genetically engineered foods, something that you promised farmers while on the campaign trail in 2007.

It is urgent that the U.S. government rectify the 20 year old politically engineered loophole and allow for open and transparent labeling of genetically engineered foods, a basic right that citizens in 62 others countries already enjoy.

This email was sent to the class about 8:50 this morning:

I’ve decided to go ahead and hold our writing class today.

I’m not feeling better, but as long as I don’t have to talk, I can get through it.

I will see you at the lab. 404 is the number, I think.

Tuesday

The instructor handed out the assignment for writing a letter to a Senator or House of Representatives member.  It is a two-part assignment.  The first part, which is an individualization effort, is due this Thursday.

On Thursday we will meet in the lab. The instructor will read students' letters and provide any corrections.

Students will work on Part 2 of the assignment with their groups in the lab.

In the last part of class, the instructor showed students about wind energy in the area where Nuclear Nebraska takes place. She expressed the importance of learning the concept of "community consent."

ENG 102 Sat. 9-12:15

We discussed plagiarism and the instructor went through a Powerpoint.

Students handed in their two pages of research paper and their two pages of the poetry explication/criticism paper. The instructor read the papers and returned them while students read two papers which the instructor passed out:  "Good Hair" and "Luck." After reading the papers, the class discussed them.

Students received class participation points for turning in the above two assignments.

To do for next week:

Research paper:  point 2. Turn in both points 1 and 2 with internal text citations and a Works Cited.

Poetry paper:  turn in two pages of the explication combined with literary criticism or research turned up on the literary databases or through other internet research.  Needs internal text citations and a Works Cited.

Drama reading.  Read How Drama Works. There will be a quiz on the contents of this reading.

Comm 128 Tues. 7:10-10 p.m.

Writing Question:

Writing Exercise for Comm 128
Write one page examining the defensive climate of Initel in the movie “The Office Space.” First, define what a defensive climate is and what a supportive climate is and cite the text as your authority. Provide examples of how the defensive climate was exhibited and if you saw any supportive acts (yes, there were some). Point out what was strategic communication vs. spontaneous: “When coworkers communicate with each other in ways that obviously are rehearsed, they establish a defensive climate. People judge them as phony…” (McCornack 409).
If you know how to do it, use internal text citations and write a Works Cited page. Cite both the film and the text in the works cited page. If you do not know how to do this, we will go over it in class next Tuesday. The Works Cited page will bring your assignment for Tuesday to two pages.

Note: Please refer to the characters by their names in the film, not their actor’s names. Do not include the actor’s real name in the discussion. You will find a list of the characters’ names by Googling “Office Space wiki.”
In addition, you should be able to find the information needed to write the citation at Wikipedia.

Keep your eyes glued to that set until the station signs off. I can assure you that what you will observe is a vast wasteland."

The instructor told students they could review the questionnaires of other students. The link is in the Links section at the right.
