HTML Class June 29-July 1

Documents needed for tonight's class:

Powerpoint for Class 9

Bold_Italic Exercise

---------------

Example of poor color choice for readability.

Remember what I said about absolute links vs. relative links? I pointed out that it saves the designer time in the long run and that it gives more flexibility down the road in case web pages are re-purposed. In addition, there are these reasons: it aids in search engine optimization and keeps site rankings higher. The author of this article tells how that works. In addition, it makes it harder for people to rip off the site, i.e. copy it.

HTML What Happened in Class June 22/24

Wednesday night's Units of Measurement PowerPoint.

-------------------------

Make an html shell file by opening the Contacts folder from Ch. 5 and changing the author, date, etc., and eliminating everything between the body tags. Save it to your desktop as
"html_shell.txt."

Be sure you have Ch. 5 files downloaded and available to you throughout the class.

Assignment due on the last class, July 1:

Have your links page and any other pages you've created ready to show the class. We will book into a classroom with a computer and overhead projector. Each student will show his page and tell the class about it.

At this time, you can talk about any special effects you may have used to create the page, such as graphics you created in Photoshop or Illustrator.

Powerpoint for Class 2: The (X)HTML Document

The instructor asked the class how they did on getting on to the free Web space that goes with their provider. No one had yet accomplished this.

A terminology sheet was distributed for students to write definitions in as they do the class readings. The definitions should be written in the student's own words.

Next she handed out a worksheet and asked the class members to open up a Powerpoint which was located at the blog.

We went through the Powerpoint to learn the structure of an HTML document: document declaration, titles, head, and body.

We went through the Powerpoint a second time with the worksheet and labeled the various sections of the HTML.

We took a break and the instructor made copies of the reading for a few of the students who had not yet obtained the book.

After the break we started on the next class project, which was to learn how to create headings, paragraphs, line breaks and horizontal rules.

A worksheet was distributed and the instructor explained how to copy the HTML from the book's sample and adapt it for the links page (last class's assignment).

Students worked on this page through the end of the class.

Next class:

Readings: Have 2-29 read.

Do the definitions page.
Work on accessing web space at your ISP
Find a 3-ring notebook to organize class materials. Get dividers (about 5)
