ENG102, Wed., 2:30-5:30

The instructor returned and later picked up the writing sample. She gave students feedback on their writing and she also explained the corrections (CRX) policy. See p. 224 of Lester for a CRX marking table.

We broke up into pairs (dyads) and students interviewed each other and we then did paired introductions. The instructor taught a technique for remembering people's names.

After doing the paired introductions, we worked on two drama questions. The answers were turned into the instructor.

We then went to the computer lab where the instructor explained to students how to do an Annotated Works Cited. In addition, students were asked to work on a research topic and do their 10 citations on their topic. Students are to come to class next week with 10 Annotated Works Cited, which includes five scholarly journals. The instructor showed students where to obtain scholarly journals.

under each source is a brief paragraph telling what is in the magazine article, journal, radio clip, or whatever source it is.

We looked at The Tower coupon flyer.

 Discussed flyer assignment (can be with or without coupon). Instructor told class about layouts. We watched  a .ppt.

We discussed Superbowl commercial viewing for Thursday. We chipped in for chips and snacks; everyone will bring their own beverage.

On Tuesday the coupon/flyer layout will be due.

Students should read the chapter on TV.

We wrote about what we did to obtain a Tower ad.

The instructor asked Daniel to tell the class about the new advertising rates. We went over the publication and deadline dates. Each student received one tri-fold advertising rate card.

We went over the magazine layouts by looking first at the student's choice of ads. Then we looked at the copy and layout. Students were given until Thursday to revise their layouts.

Students are to find a coupon for a future ad assignment that will be similar to the one on which we are currently working.  In addition, students should be watching for packaging for a consumer product such as a printer, phone, an iron, a blender, or some other such object. We will be using this for the features/benefits class.

Students should be reading Ch's 7 & 8 in the text. Both chapters have to do with print and layouts.

Speech Critical 1402 12:30-1:45

 We did paired introductions and learned a technique for remembering other people's names.

Students will meet with their groups on Tuesday.

Students are to read the chapter on informative speaking and base their outlines on the model provided in this chapter.

We went to the computer lab and learned how to do an Annotated Works Cited. Students turned in three citations at the end of the class. The next step is to add the two other citations to the Annotated Works Cited for Thursday.

ENG 102 Sat. a.m.

We went over the syllabus with the new students. Students who were in class last week spent time figuring out what their topic would be. They later reported this topic to the instructor.

Students who were not in class last week did the writing sample and turned it in.


Students who were in class were excused after the assignment to obtain 5 sources was given. We are attempting to get everyone in the class on the same track.

Assignment for students new to the class:

Read the drama chapter from the links section at right. It's called "How Drama Works."  You may also access it from this link.

Get your book by ordering online or going to the bookstore. 
Sign up for writershelp.

Look over research paper topics. Most of the ones listed here are taken, but you may write the instructor to check for sure. You may also come up with your own research paper topic, but it has to be approved by the instructor. Do not spend time researching until your topic is approved.

Assignment for students who were in the first class:

Obtain the five sources (everything but the scholarly journals).

ENG 128 Comm Dynamics

We went over Ch. 1 terms that were pertinent to the evening's exercise.

We wrote out responses to the situation (Punjita).

We divided into groups to discuss and evaluate answers to the situation.

We reported back to the group.

The instructor gave the assignment and we went over the syllabus.

Assignment:

Read Ch. 2 and do the accompanying workbook pages:  Study Outline from 11-16, 18, 19 (do a brief answer--1-2 sentences); and 20-21.

We will wait to catch up on Ch. 2 when everyone has their book.

Advertising 3765 2-3:15

Ways to Sell a Tower Ad

We went over the above handout. Students are to work 1-2 hours per week to sell an ad for The Tower. Efforts will be recorded in class. The handout gives students ideas and ways to try to accomplish this task. Students will be asked to report on the progress for this assignment by writing for five minutes at each class.

The instructor showed students how to do print layouts from the standpoint of an account executive. The assignment is to find an ad and do the layout. We will look at student work at our next class by putting it on the overhead projector.

In addition, at our next class we will go over the rate card and The Tower deadlines. The instructor will bring a flyer that tells about the coupon special.

Students are also to read the chapter (7 in 9th ed) on print copywriting. In addition, Ch. 8 on layouts will also be helpful to read. (note that these chapters are listed later on the reading schedule. If you read them now, you will only have to review them later)

Note:  when doing your layout, do only the text box on the computer. The rest of the assignment needs to be done by sketching in with a pencil.

Writing102 Wed. 2:30 p.m.

We went over the syllabus and we did a writing sample.

Assignment:  Read Ch. 1 in Lester (free at coursesmart.com). Read the drama handout. Come up with three potential topics for the research paper.
