Writing 102 Friday Evening Class

Exercise for Friday Evening Class:

Convert MLA citations to APA.

First the instructor will go over differences in MLA and APA.

The instructor will provide you with a citation sheet in MLA. Using the materials provided for you, as well as your text, re-write the citations as APA.

Print out two copies: one for the instructor and one for you for your files.

You will be provided with a copy to check against when you return to the classroom.

In addition, you must convert several in-text citations to APA. Change citations on several pages of your paper to APA. Add this to the above Works Cited/References and turn it in.

If you are unable to complete this assignment in the time allowed, you may finish it and email it to the instructor by Monday.

Turn in:

one copy of the citation sheet you converted to APA

one-two pages of internal citations in APA

Note: I do not want you to turn in any MLA citations. I already have them.

The instructor handed out the final assignment: outdoor or graphic display. We watched a .ppt which featured outdoor and graphic displays. This .ppt is posted at Blackboard. Students were asked to identify the Unique Selling Proposition for each of the ads.

We talked about the Account Management section of the class, where students contact a potential advertiser for The Tower.

Next we worked on radio scripts. The instructor showed a comparison of ads. She stressed repetition, getting the benefits up front early in the ad, and concrete, specific benefits.

Papers were handed back.

Next week:

Bring portfolio.

Category headings for portfolio, which is due the last day of class:

Direct Mail (long sales letter)

Google Adwords and youtube

Market Research

Newspaper

Outdoor/visual display

Radio

Account Management (Insertion order, newspaper ad, Part A & B)

--------------

First we discussed the Tower newspaper project. The instructor showed students the coupons and the flyer. There was some discussion as to whether advertisers in the immediate vicinity of Kean would receive a benefit from the break coupons. It was pointed out that the school is largely commuter oriented. The instructor suggested to students that they choose clients who will benefit ffrom students being out of school and who might not necessarily be in the immediate vicinity of the school. In some cases, students may want to suggest a newspaper ad rather than the coupon.

Students were provided with items to add to their media kit: the flyer featuring the coupon, the coupon layout sheet, and a copy of The Tower.

It was decided that Part A would be due on Dec. 9. This means the student must have contacted the client before the next class.

Next the instructor told students about the radio ad. She showed them the assignment sheet (later a hard copy was distributed). She showed them how to set up the script page on the computer. In addition, there was a handout describing situations, formats, and emotional appeals. The instructor went over the handout in class.

After the break, we went over the deadlines for the rest of the class.

Assignments were returned.

The instructor noted that at the next class the final assignment on visual display would be given. At the next class, we will watch a .ppt on types of visual display. The student can do an outdoor board, another type of visual display, or a store window.

Next class:

Read the assigned chapter. There will be an exercise related to the chapter and if you have not read the chapter, you will not be able to participate in the exercise.

Radio ad due

Part A due for Tower.

Thurs., Dec. 3

Today we turned in the radio script and Part A of the Account Management assignment.

The instructor introduced the last assignment, which is to design an outdoor board or visual display. Toward that end, the instructor showed students a .ppt that featured various kinds of outdoor boards and displays. As a class, we determined what the client was selling (in terms of a unique selling proposition).

Next we broke into brainstorming groups. The instructor went over the highlights of how such a group works (no idea is a bad idea). Students worked with their colleagues to work out possible display ideas.
