Writing 102 Tues-Thurs

We had a poetry presentation on the confessional poetry genre. Roman took us through Robert Lowell's "Skunk Hour."

The instructor returned papers with corrections.

Next the instructor talked about titles. There was a .ppt. After watching the .ppt, students wrote a title with a benefit. Then they wrote subheads for the paper. The mechanics of titles (capitalization) was also taught.

The instructor then showed students how to write the literature (research) review. The following two questions will help students write this section:

1) who are the major researchers in the field of research that is being discussed?

2) what did the major studies find?

To Do for Next Class:

Complete the paper, putting in corrections and feedback provided by the instructor. Bring the paper to class on Tues., May 3. Papers will also be accepted on the night of the play (April 28). There is no class on Thursday.

To All UCC 102 Students

It looks like you will be able to purchase the theater tickets for $5 due to a grant that has been received.  Here is the info:

The Theater Project has secured funding through CEPAC so students may attend for half the already discounted student price.  Standard admission is $25, Student admission is $10, but with the CEPAC funding the cost to UCC students is a mere $5.  In order to assist students in accessing this production which runs Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays at 8:00 PM and Sundays at 3:00 PM from April 28th to May 15 The Theater Project Box Office will be open in The Commons each afternoon of opening week.

So it looks like all you have to do is stop by and purchase your ticket.

Public Speaking 129, 6-9 p.m.

We had one informative speech (Haley Marie). The instructor said that all outlines for informative speeches must be reviewed.

We discussed the second and final speech of the class, which is the persuasive speech. The instructor urged students to choose their topics soon. Three sources should be attained each week for this speech and there needs to be a total of 8-10 sources. We did some topic selection, the results of which are posted on the persuasive topics link.

She showed students where the Monroe Motivated Sequence is and asked them to read the outline. We will be working with the outline over the coming weeks.

Students were given 30" to research new topics at the library. Meanwhile, the instructor reviewed the informative speech outlines. She returned them with comments when students returned from the library exercise.

During the final part of the class, we reviewed nonverbal communication terms such as haptics, illustrators, etc. The instructor showed students a field trip form and it will be posted in the links section soon.  We looked up the terms in our textbook and then we watched a recording which featured each of the terms.

Next week students will be delivering informative speeches.

To Do for Next Week:

CSS Class Tues-Thurs 6-9 p.m.

Class 5 .ppt

Class 6 .ppt

Class 7.ppt

Class 8.ppt

This is the last week of CSS. We will be starting Dreamweaver next week!

Tonight we learned about forms. We went through the book and the instructor's .ppt. As an exercise to show students how forms work, we each did a form using Google forms in their documents section.

There was one glitch that we could not resolve before class was over. Here is how to resolve it:

The link for the form itself is at the bottom of the page when you first create the form. Use this link to mail to your recipients. Take a look at my form as an example.

You may or may not be able to see the link at this page. I do not know if Google lets you see it.

The easiest way to do this might be to start a new form. Use the plain version while putting in your questions. After you have created the questions, then choose a template. Be sure to copy the URL at the bottom of the form creation page.

If you have any questions, send me an e-mail and I'll be happy to help you.  I'm around in the morning on Wed. and can help via phone, email or Yahoo chat.
