Group Communication

Thurs., Sept. 19

We went to the computer lab and did our personality profiles. Afterwards, we returned to the classroom and put our profiles on the board and saw what type we had the most of in the class.

We are overwhelmingly a class of introverts. INFP was the most frequently found type.

At a future class, we may divide into groups to discuss the experience of being each type.

Tues., Sept. 17

We discussed nonverbal communication in small group settings. First the instructor reviewed terms from the text. We then went into small groups and the instructor handed out an envelope to each group. Each person in the group received a nonverbal communication to express in the small group. We then assessed who was the best sender and receiver.

For Thursday, we will do a personality profile. This profile will be valuable in learning how to communicate the best way to others.

Students are asked to bring a tablet or notebook. Cell phones will also work.

Media Advertising 2-3:15 p.m.

Tues., Sept. 17

Pat Lauro and the editor for The Tower visited the class to talk about the role and importance of The Tower at Kean University.

The instructor handed out a two-page example of how to lay out a print ad.  She asked students to bring three ads to the Thursday class. We will do a layout in class.

ENG102 1:25 and 2:30 p.m. classes

 Fri., Sept. 20:

Discuss the writing of the paper. Show students past poetry papers. Discuss the multimedia aspect of the poetry assignment.

Some tips on writing the paper that is due Monday:

  • Report more on the world events (to which the genre responds) and the psychology of the people in the movement than the history of the movement.
  • Yes, the history is interesting, but avoid long lists of names. If you are going to discuss other poets in the genre, do so with some additional information about who they are and why they were attracted to the movement
  • Spare us long lists of the names of poems and when the dates they were written.
  • If you are writing about a form or technique, do provide examples of the metre or rhyme. Add examples

Wed., Sept. 18

We checked in research and thesis statement exercises.

The instructor handed out the assignment for the writing of the first part of the poetry paper. This paper will be due Monday, Sept. 23.

1:25 class:  the instructor showed students MLA formatting and how to refer to writershelp for assistance in their formatting.

2:30 class:  we did introductions. We will continue with intros on Friday, in addition to a further discussion of the requirements of the paper

Monday, Sept. 17

We checked in both the poetry research and the writershelp thesis exercises.

ENG 128 11:15-12:10

Fri., Sept. 20

We used the worksheets from the last class and worked through an example provided by another student. Students wrote examples of negative self-talk on slips of paper and the instructor redistributed them.

Then we worked through the four categories on the worksheet and learned how to turn the negative self-talk into positive self-talk.

For the next class, read chapter on the reading schedule and also bring a tablet, notebook, or your cell phone for use in doing the personality profile.

Wed., Sept. 18

We discussed a system where the instructor can let students know via a text if she cannot be in class. We acquired phone numbers for this task.

We reviewed definitions from Ch. 2. We began a discussion of the self-fulfilling prophecy. The instructor passed out a worksheet with which we will continue on Friday, in addition to checking in the workbooks.

Next Monday students should bring a tablet or a notebook. Phones may also be used. We will be taking the Kiersey temperament sorter.

Group Communication 12:30-1:45 Tues. Thurs.

Thursday, Sept. 12

We looked over Ch.1 and talked about the various types of groups there are. We looked for examples of groups in students' lives but we didn't come up with many.

At another time the instructor will discuss quality circles.

The instructor told students about her previous work as a freelance group facilitator. She suggested students keep copies of the class exercises in case they ever want to do something similar.

We went into small groups to experience an icebreaker exercise. Every group facilitator should have a repertoire of icebreakers, as they are frequently needed. Students elected a leader and the leader made sure all the participants of the group answered the questions.

Students then went back to their regular position in the class and were given a questionnaire and were asked to answer the questions anonymously. At an upcoming class, the instructor will give the class an overview of the answers.

To Do for Next Class

Answer the questions for the Ch. 1 handout and write approximately one page of the question that interests you the most. This assignment is due next Tuesday.

Work on the questions for Ch. 2; same situation with the written question. This assignment is due next Thursday.

Per the reading schedule, read Ch. 3. A similar questionnaire will be distributed next week.

Tuesday, Sept 10

We did a few introductions.

We divided into groups for future experiential learning purposes. We exchanged contact information. The instructor made copies so students each had the contact information.

To Do for Next Class:

Read Ch. 1. We will finish intros and do an experiential exercise with our groups.

Media Advertising 2-3:15 p.m.

Tuesday, Sept. 10

Creativity in Advertising

We worked on an exercise from chapter 1 where we focused on the creativity of newspaper ads. Students divided into groups and analyzed an ad they chose from The New York Times.  After doing the analysis, students put their ad on the board and explained their analysis to the other students. We finished all but one newspaper ad, which we will finish at the next chapter.

Next class we will finish any introductions that remain. We will also hear from the one group that did not get to present on Monday.

We will have guest speakers from The Tower. Prof. Pat Lauro is our guest and we may have the editor and an assistant who will be helping students with their ads (Debra).

To Do for Next Class:

Read Ch. 1. There will be five reading questions for students to prove they read the chapter.

I can make it to class; I just can’t talk. I thought we could do the Helvetica quiz and the class evaluation today. Don’t bring the box. We will do that next Tuesday.
Also, I don’t think I am contagious. I’ve had this thing since September and I understand a person is only contagious with it the first three or so days of the illness.

Thursday

Following is information that will help you adjust your letter to President Obama: Take only the essential parts and add it to your letter. Pull out your references to asking him not to sign it and ask him to do the part in red below.
-------------

I'm outraged that Congress allowed Section 735, the Monsanto Protection Act in a short-term spending bill and passed it and that you have now signed it into law. This is a deep betrayal of our most basic constitutional rights and by signing H.R. 933 without issuing a signing statement or taking other actions to block this provision you have allowed great harm to America's family farmers, our environment and our democracy.

In an effort to balance this violation of our basic rights, I am urging you as President to issue an Executive Order to require the mandatory labeling of genetically engineered foods, something that you promised farmers while on the campaign trail in 2007.

It is urgent that the U.S. government rectify the 20 year old politically engineered loophole and allow for open and transparent labeling of genetically engineered foods, a basic right that citizens in 62 others countries already enjoy.

-------------------

This email was sent to the class about 8:50 this morning:

I’ve decided to go ahead and hold our writing class today.

I’m not feeling better, but as long as I don’t have to talk, I can get through it.

I will see you at the lab. 404 is the number, I think.

Students handed in their two pages of research paper and their two pages of the poetry explication/criticism paper. The instructor read the papers and returned them while students read two papers which the instructor passed out:  "Good Hair" and "Luck." After reading the papers, the class discussed them.

Students received class participation points for turning in the above two assignments.

To do for next week:

Research paper:  point 2. Turn in both points 1 and 2 with internal text citations and a Works Cited.

Poetry paper:  turn in two pages of the explication combined with literary criticism or research turned up on the literary databases or through other internet research.  Needs internal text citations and a Works Cited.

Drama reading.  Read How Drama Works. There will be a quiz on the contents of this reading.

Comm 128 Tues. 7:10-10 p.m.

Writing Question:

Writing Exercise for Comm 128
Write one page examining the defensive climate of Initel in the movie “The Office Space.” First, define what a defensive climate is and what a supportive climate is and cite the text as your authority. Provide examples of how the defensive climate was exhibited and if you saw any supportive acts (yes, there were some). Point out what was strategic communication vs. spontaneous: “When coworkers communicate with each other in ways that obviously are rehearsed, they establish a defensive climate. People judge them as phony…” (McCornack 409).
If you know how to do it, use internal text citations and write a Works Cited page. Cite both the film and the text in the works cited page. If you do not know how to do this, we will go over it in class next Tuesday. The Works Cited page will bring your assignment for Tuesday to two pages.

Note: Please refer to the characters by their names in the film, not their actor’s names. Do not include the actor’s real name in the discussion. You will find a list of the characters’ names by Googling “Office Space wiki.”
In addition, you should be able to find the information needed to write the citation at Wikipedia.

Obama's Aunt Coming to Essex County College

Onyango grew up with future president's father.

• By Paul Milo

The aunt of President Barack Obama, Zeituni Onyango, will visit the Newark campus of Essex County College next week.

The free program, sponsored by the college’s Humanities Division, will be held in Siegler Hall, from 7 to 9 p.m. on March 6.

Onyango’s talk will focus on her personal experiences with domestic abuse, immigration matters, homelessness, racism and race relations, the struggle to empower women, and growing up in the home of the father of President Obama in Kenya.

Onyango will also discuss her book, Tears of Abuse. She is referenced as “Auntie Zeituni” in President Obama’s memoir Dreams from My Father.

“Her message is one of educational empowerment for young people,” said Mikal N. Nash, a history instructor and coordinator of ECC’s Associate degree Africana Studies Program. “She feels very strong about literacy in Africa and the importance of bringing resources to all the young people of Africa, both female and male.”

Onyango’s visit to ECC is two days before International Women’s Day, which has been observed since 1911 throughout the world. The United Nations also observes International Women’s Day. This year’s UN theme is “A Promise is a Promise: Time for Action to End Violence Against Women.”

Additional information on this program is available from Mr. Nash, who can be contacted at 973-877-3489 or via email here.

Tower sales groups meet and discuss layouts using chapter on Ideas, etc. to generate ideas. Sketch out ads, discuss with professor.

Next week's reading:

Ch. 4 Fact-finding

Tuesday:

Students handed in their layouts.

The instructor returned feedback sheets on the two different ways ads are laid out. She said she should have put more emphasis on the stage at which the layouts are done. First the account executive roughs out an ad and then after it is approved, it moves on in the production process to the graphic designer. She went over an explanation which will be posted at this blog later.

We briefly discussed the need for a computer lab session(s) and the students told the instrutor about two labs in the CAS building that she will check out. One is on the 2nd floor and one on the first.

The purpose for the lab sessions is to show students how layers work and to show them how color files are prepared for the printer. This is the first year we have had color at The Tower.

We discussed reading checks and we will have one reading check on Ch. 1 this Thursday.

We switched the reading around. This week the instructor asked students to focus on chapters 6 & 7 ("Ideas" is one of the chapter titles) instead of 9 & 14, which are on the reading schedule. The reason is that we want to be able to sketch out some ad ideas for potential clients.

The media kit with rates will be ready on Thursday, so that is the first item of business at our next class session.
