Comm 128

The class read the syllabus and did paired introductions.

The book situation is very unclear. Some students were able to purchase the book as early as January 16th. Other students were told the bookstore does not have the book. The instructor was told on the afternoon before class (January 29th )that the bookstore had 18 copies. Here are a couple places where the book is for sale:

  • buy at this site for 73.60 and return before 6/30 and get 36.80 back. Book cost is then 36.80
The classroom issue is cleared up. Go to room 323. It has an overhead computer projector. Students may be able to go to a computer lab to try out the techniques shown in class.

We will not be using the book for the first two weeks of class. Instead, we will focus on getting started on the media theory/paper and the annotated bibliography.

Instructor talked about needs assessment and we did a class exercise based on the assessment.
Students will write one-two paragraphs based on their needs assessment.
Setup as letter or memo.
Notebook due date is Febr. 12. Worth 3 points on notebook grade.
1 point: has notebook; 2 points-- has notebooks with categories; 3 points--has notebook with categories and all class materials and papers filed.
----------------
We looked at prof'l definitions of event planning. We did a class exercise where we defined event planning according to the prof'l definitions.

We were in groups and made a list of personality characteristics, work ethics and work practices of an event planner (based on definitions). Then we had to measure up how we would be as an event planner. File in Class Worksheets/Exercises.

We discussed event dimensions. We went through Anticipation and Arrival. We have four more to discuss. We will also be getting an events needs assessment form that lists the dimensions.

On Thursday we will be showing the instructor the outlines from the book that we have done. Topic for next class is needs assessment.

Writing 102: Books

I spoke with Anthony at the bookstore, who told me they failed to order my books, even though the order had been submitted in writing last year. He said he might have a "few copies" of each, although the only ones for sure that they have some of is Hacker (I personally observed this).

They ordered the books while I was there and said they would be in early next week.
