Assignment Sheet for Week of Monday, Nov. 17, 2014
Writing 101, MWF
Rhetorical style:  Argumentation and Persuasion
Due date:  RD:  Nov. 28,     Final:  Dec. 5, Six-seven pages, internal text citations and a Works Cited
Argumentation and persuasive essay question:
On Nov. 14, a report released about the White House intruder stated that a key National Security Agent in charge of guarding the president and his family was on his cell phone. Can it be argued that a nation was at risk because of how these devices are used in everyday life?
In his 1922 essay “Social Change with Respect to Culture and Original Nature,” William F. Ogburn introduced the term “cultural lag,” which is a period of maladjustment that happens when the non-material culture tries to come to terms with new material conditions—conditions that can be seen when a person walks down the street engrossed in a cell phone.
The theory of technological determinism posits that technology has an independent effect on society. Ogburn’s “cultural lag” is important to consider, because most social observers concur that tears in the social fabric will occur if a broad social consensus on how technology is used is not reached.
Research the effects of the cultural lag introduced by the widespread use of the iPhone. What broad social consensus do you think needs to be reached?  Do you think laws are necessary or can humans navigate this change without laws? Your essay must include a “definitions” section, which should be in the first two pages of your essay.
