Thursday
The instructor returned the quote exercise from last class. Three points was the high. The remaining exercises will be graded and returned at the next class.
We chose a due-date for the full-sentence informative outlines. Students are to bring their outlines to class (base the outline on Ch.9 example) on Oct 26. Instructor feedback will be returned on Oct. 29.
Next we discussed critical thinking and how to determine whether a source is neutral and objective or whether it is a site with a bias or an agenda.
We watched a DVD. There will be a quiz on the DVD.
Next class:
Watch DVD, take quiz
Correct Annotated Works Cited (bring style guide or printout from I'net)
Do readings per reading schedule
Work on I Am Journal
Work on full-sentence outline
Monday
Jeff will go on Thursday, Nov 12
Note: instructor has put up the link to first page of "I Am" assignment.
We did an exercise designed to show students how to incorporate textual material into their "I Am" journal. The first example showed how to pull material from the text, integrate it with the interviewer's experience, and how to cite it correctly using MLA internal text citation:
I believe my roommate’s perception of me as “emotional” came from the first day we met in the dorm. I was very sad about leaving my boyfriend and family for an entire semester. She ranked me as “emotional,” while no other people I interviewed did. In fact, “emotional“ was halfway down the list of characteristics for my other three interviews. This difference might be accounted for by what Seiler and Beall call “perceptual sets.” They say that a perceptual set is a form of stereotyping (40).
We checked in our five sources at the end of class. Thursday there will be five more sources due in Annotated Works Cited form.
