Writing 102 Friday Evening Class

The instructor discussed plagiarism--what it is and how to bring material in the correct way.
After the instructor's presentation, we did a worksheet where students did direct and indirect quotes. There were three ways to do internal text citations.

We added transitions to the research paper.

The drama quiz was given and we corrected the papers in class.

We discussed the poetry readings and the instructor told the students the assignment consisted of:

1. one-page paper on the poet and his/her place in the genre

2. one-page paper of what what you think the poem means

3. find a picture of the poet

4. mp3 or do the reading of the poem yourself

The instructor showed the class the research paper grade scoring sheet. She will email the sheet to students for their use this week and next week they will receive hard copies.

The last item was the Langan check-in.

To do for next class:

Adv. 3100 What Happened in Class

We first talked about the portfolio and what had to be done to get the items into the most presentable, attractive form. The instructor asked students to put their market research form in a word doc and use the square box for the check mark area. This should be followed by a printout of the surveymonkey.com questionnaire.

The instructor returned the long sales letter outlines and gave students time to review her comments.

She then presented the assignment for the youtube video. The assignment was read in class and students were asked to note two text references on the assignment sheet: Arens, page 431 for the concept of storyboard and 432 for the video comp. Students were then shown examples of storyboards.

Students are obtaining youtube articles from the trade publications to a) see what the trade press is finding about this advertising medium and b) for possible information and ideas that will support our argument for the concept to our client. Trade publications/areas are listed at the end of this post.

Students discussed deadline dates. The due dates are posted on the calendar (see calendar link at left).

After the break, the instructor handed out a sample test. We are resuming readings in the Arens text and are working on Ch. 8. Students will take their first online test this week. The paper copy of the test was given to help students move into this new activity. The instructor recommended the students do the paper copy of the test as soon as possible so they are ready to take the test when she emails the link toward the weekend.

We watched the narrated slides for Ch. 8 and the instructor occasionally added examples.

After the narrated slides for Ch. 8, we watched the commercials that are discussed in the chapter.

First we covered the poetry assignment. Each student chose a genre. We chose dates for the poetry readings. Presentation dates are at the end of this post.

The instructor showed the class the exercise and worksheet for next week when we write the intro. She asked students to bring their three points with the third point on top and the other two with corrections on the bottom. We will write the intros in class and the instructor will make copies so students can begin editing them into the paper, which is nearing completion.

The instructor will book a computer lab and students should go directly to the lab. The instructor will email the room number. We will work on the poetry presentation and the intro in the lab.

We finished the Powerpoint and worksheet on usage of the colon. Students were asked to work some of the various uses they learned into their research papers.

The instructor went over some of the items that will be on the drama quiz next week.

Writing 102 Friday What Happened in Class

First we went through common errors. The instructor put up examples of some errors from student papers on the doc cam.

The instructor returned the papers of the three points of the research paper that the students have written to date.

Next we went through revision symbols. We located the revision symbols in Hacker and saw how the boldfaced number referred to the section in the text that showed how to correct the error.

The instructor gave the general rules for corrections:

1) The instructor marks only the first error. Students must go through the paper for each error and correct all the others.

2) All corrections given to the student must be made before handing the paper in the next time. The instructor has the option of deducting one letter grade from the paper if corrections are not made.

Next we started work on introductions. We watched a video on how to write the funnel opening and the instructor handed out an accompanying worksheet. We wrote the introduction in class and the instructor kept one copy and gave students back the original.

After the break, the instructor collected the final versions of the drama paper.

The instructor discussed the poetry assignment and went over how students could find an .mp3 of their poet doing a reading on the LION database or through a Yahoo .mp3 search. The search term that was used as an example was "Robert Frost .mp3" and this yielded 1.7 million mp.3s.

We did not have time to finish the colon worksheet, so bring it to the next class and we will finish it then.

A few students requested clarification on what needed to be done for Langan chapters. The instructor told them "everything." This includes the tests. The only thing that does not need to be done is when there are multiple essay questions. Then the student should do only one of the essays.

Next week:

Langan check-in (through Ch. 15)
Read Ch. 8 in Lester
Study for drama quiz
Review introduction and re-write to turn in next class
Bring all three points plus intro to the next class because we will be writing transitions

Advertising 3100 What Happened in Class

In the first half of the class, we looked at the long sales letters. One was an example of a student's work and the other examples were from the Kennedy book. After this discussion, the instructor collected the students' sales letter outlines. Prior to collecting them, however, each person critiqued a colleague's letter based on what they learned from the instructor's discussion.

Students also turned in their final market research questionnaires for a grade.

The instructor returned newspaper ads with comments. The ads are to be finished and turned in for a final grade next week.

The instructor passed out the three-ring binders for making the portfolio.

In the second half of the class, we studied the Unique Selling Proposition. The instructor went through a Powerpoint and the students had a worksheet that helped them write a USP. After doing the worksheet, the instructor made copies so the student could work from the USP for ongoing projects.

Next week:

Oct. 28--final newspaper ad
Nov. 4-final version of sales letter is due

Reading: Kennedy, 147-206

Instructor will issue deadline dates for the remaining projects of the portfolio.

Monday

We had trouble with the light being out on the rear-screen projector so we moved to Room 359.

First we talked about the market research zip code exercise, where each student is to extrapolate some observation based on the data. Link to research.

Next we talked about the long sales letter. The instructor put some rough drafts up on the doc cam and we read through them and talked about various features and things to do or not do. An example of something not to do is to mention price.

Next class:

we will be in the lab putting our newspaper ads together so get art elements, copy, etc., together so you can finish

bring long sales letter

bring final of market research questionnaire

1402 Monday

Thursday
The instructor returned the quote exercise from last class. Three points was the high. The remaining exercises will be graded and returned at the next class.

We chose a due-date for the full-sentence informative outlines. Students are to bring their outlines to class (base the outline on Ch.9 example) on Oct 26. Instructor feedback will be returned on Oct. 29.

Next we discussed critical thinking and how to determine whether a source is neutral and objective or whether it is a site with a bias or an agenda.

We watched a DVD. There will be a quiz on the DVD.

Next class:

Watch DVD, take quiz
Correct Annotated Works Cited (bring style guide or printout from I'net)
Do readings per reading schedule
Work on I Am Journal
Work on full-sentence outline

Monday
Jeff will go on Thursday, Nov 12

Note: instructor has put up the link to first page of "I Am" assignment.

We did an exercise designed to show students how to incorporate textual material into their "I Am" journal. The first example showed how to pull material from the text, integrate it with the interviewer's experience, and how to cite it correctly using MLA internal text citation:

I believe my roommate’s perception of me as “emotional” came from the first day we met in the dorm. I was very sad about leaving my boyfriend and family for an entire semester. She ranked me as “emotional,” while no other people I interviewed did. In fact, “emotional“ was halfway down the list of characteristics for my other three interviews. This difference might be accounted for by what Seiler and Beall call “perceptual sets.” They say that a perceptual set is a form of stereotyping (40).

We checked in our five sources at the end of class. Thursday there will be five more sources due in Annotated Works Cited form.

Teaching Experience with Dimensions

Occasionally I will write a post about my experiences with teaching.

Last night my students from a night class had the assignment of going to a play.

While the students went to the performance, I read their research paper drafts. I hadone student to whom I had suggested the topic of how play develops certain characteristics in children, such as cooperation with others, self-regulation, organizational skills, etc.

I got her started in the research with a story that had run on NPR. Last night she had six
pages for me to read, and an Annotated Works Cited. So far she has done a wonderful job of turning up sources and is doing well on the paper.

The place where the play was being performed is is next to what is called The Atrium, a large commons with a sunken area almost like an amphitheater. There are tables around the edge, interspersed with tall palm trees. I set up shop across the amphitheater and began correcting papers.

Not long after I began my work, a group of dozen young guys arrived with their boom box. They went into the sunken area. They put on some music, rolled out a large mat, and began dancing. They were amazing to watch. What agility. What smoothness to such complicated moves. They could do things like spin around on one hand with their feet in the air, their body shaped like a crescent. They did handstands, somersaults, and moves I can't even find words to describe.

Some of them were better than the others. The ones I particularly liked had a sort of connectedness to their moves that made me think of a marionnette. They would step in and out at random, practicing a particular maneuver, then stepping back to give another dancer a chance on the mat. Sometimes they would twirl around outside the map.

Now, mind you, I was watching this unfold while I read my student's paper on the role of play in maturation, so in effect, the research paper was coming to life before my eyes. As I read the paper, I could see it happening, right in front of me. As these were young adults, I could see the mature "end result."

Of course, as a communications teacher, the "play on words" did not escape me. While my students were at the play, I was reading a paper about play and I was watching play in action.

Writing 102 Thursday Night: Important

Because of the bad weather and the traffic conditions, I am revising our meeting time to be a little later. Come at 7:40 and go directly to the atrium, across from the cafeteria. That is where the play entrance is.

Originally we were to meet at 7 at our classroom.

See you at 7:40. Also, bring your paper. I will read it while you are at the play and return it to you after the play.

Advertising 3960 What Happened in Class

First we looked at some students' sales letter outlines on the overhead projector.

We talked about the research questionnaire and how it will be placed in the portfolio binder.

We talked about the confusing nature of the class, what with all the various assignments, readings, etc. The instructor clarified by telling students this is a "broad overview" class and to not worry about knowing the details, just the major highpoints.

We talked about the tests and how they will count toward the final grade. They are a test of reading, not the actual score.

Upcoming classes:

Oct. 19 cover the rest of graphic file formats
Oct. 22 Lab to do newspaper layouts
Oct 26: Instructor returns newspaper ad with input
Oct: 29: student returns ad for final grade.

To Do for Next Class:

Read Kennedy 129-46
Work on newspaper ad--writing copy, looking for art

The instructor and the class set up an email texting system in case of bad weather, storm, or other type of delay or cancellation of the class. Cory is the contact (Aura is the backup) and the instructor will call her and Cory or Aura will text the rest of the class. The instructor will also post on the blog and students may check that before class, too.

Instructor asked class about the Kennedy book and few students had read the assignment because they don’t have the book. One student said he had ordered this book for $9 online. It is imperative to get the book immediately because all writing for the portfolio must be roughed out in October.

Binders: Correct the questionnaire and put it in the binder.. In addition students should get as many as possible to take the questionnaire.

Newspaper ad: We went over student ideas for newspaper ads and the instructor showed how to make them more effective. We showed the ads on the overhead projector. Then we went to the lab and the instructor worked with students in writing and laying out the newspaper ad.

To Do for Next Class

Writing 102 Saturday

We saw the play. After the play, the instructor asked the students to write their first draft tomorrow morning while the play was still fresh in their mind. One student mentioned that Ruby Sunrise might be on youtube.

While the students were at the play, the instructor read their Point 1, which was handed in at the beginning of class. The papers were returned with corrections and the instructor asked students to do the following:

a) write two pages of description of what their paper is about. For example, if the paper is about healthcare system, the student should describe in details employer group healthcare, individually purchased policies, Medicare, and Medicaid.

b) continue writing the paper, this time Point 2

c) Prepare for Langan check in in two weeks (Oct. 24). Eleven chapters should be done by the 24th.

d) Read the next chapter in Lester (six, I believe).

102 Friday 6-9 What Happened in Class

The instructor collected Pt. 2 of the research paper and returned Pt. 1.

We discussed Langan and how much the completed book will count toward the grade. We looked at the syllabus and determined that the Langan will be 15 of the 25 class participation points.

We talked about stage directions and what function they serve in a play read as literature. We also discussed the play we saw last week and the instructor talked about McCarthyism. We looked at a PowerPoint that showed pictures from that time.

We went through a handout the instructor provided called "A Dozen Things I Know About Writing."

We did peer readings of the drama paper. While students were doing the peer readings, the instructor read Pt. 2.

The instructor talked about primary and secondary sources. We saw examples of the George Washington letter that was found at Kean University.

To Do:

Three chapters a week in Langan for the rest of the term.

Monday:

First we talked about the move from reading the Arens text to the Kennedy text. The instructor highlighted the reading for the week, which is about 100 pages. It "goes quickly," however, as one student commented.

Next the instructor talked about trading area surveys. She told how McDonald's does them and why. How McDonalds uses the data was also discussed: driving the area, putting up outdoor boards, targeting a competitor, etc.

The class worked on an exercise using the zip code map where we each entered our zip code. She then directed students to the links in this blog post. Students looked up information and entered it on a document. At a future class, we will analyze the data.

At the end of class, the instructor handed back the market research questionnaires. Students are to revise them and bring them in for a final grade October 15.

To do:

revise questionnaire
read Kennedy (see syllabus for exact pages) and pay particular attention to the apartment example
Be sure you've read through Ch. 6 in Arens Oooops. Error. I remember now that we substituted Ch. 12 for Ch. 6. So just read Ch. 12, not 6.

Writing 102 Saturday What Happened in Class

We are meeting at Cranford to attend the play for the next class. Show up by 7:30 p.m. and go to Rm. N24. There will be no Saturday morning class. Note: this was changed in class to students should all meet at the atrium at 7:45.

Read the drama handout before coming to class. Also read all the drama terms at the drama glossary. Also, read the paper emailed to you (paper by Camilla).

Rough draft of the drama paper is to be completed by the following Saturday, October 17. Peer reading on the 17th, make corrections and return on the 24th.

Tip. While watching the play, record the chronology:

Example: Rubie needs a place to live.
She is able to live with her aunt for two weeks.

-----
Instructor went over the process for peer reading. Next week we will do a peer reading of four pages of the research paper.

------------
Students presented their working thesis statement, which the instructor recorded. She will set up a table where students will enter their email so research material can be sent to them.
-----------

We answered a quiz on the DVD we watched about propaganda in the news and in particular, on Fox News. Each quiz was scored and students were asked to keep the quiz in their notebook/folder.

---------------

We corrected the Annotated Works Cited. First the instructor went over items like margins, formatting, etc. Then the students looked up each citation and corrected it for their colleague.

Writing 102 Thursday What Happened in Class

We discussed the theatre paper, which is due one week after we attend the theatre performance (Oct. 22). The assignment sheet is posted at the Student Links page.

After reading the assignment, we voted on what night to see the play. The class decided on seeing the play October 15. We will meet at 7 because the play will go about 80" longer than the class time. We will meet in the regular classroom first and go over to the play 45" later.

Next we did the critical thinking quiz on Fox News. The quiz doesn't count on the grade but it served as a way to discuss some of the concepts introduced by the DVD. In addition, it showed students what type of questions the instructors asks on quizzes. It also shows the protocol for how we grade papers in class.

After the quiz, we went around the room and students read their working thesis statement.

We went into peer group reading sessions for Point One. Students who did not have their paper have to write a total of four pages next week. We will probably do peer readings again next week. The instructor will return Point One next week.

The last item on the agenda was to correct the Annotated Works Cited page.

To do for next week:

Write two more pages on research paper (Pt 2)

Correct Annotated Works Cited to turn in for a grade

Read through chapter five in Lester and Langan. There will be a Langan check and points will be given for having the assignment completed.

Read half the drama terms and know them. Possible quiz.

Read the other half of "How Drama Works." It will be posted at the Student Links page by Saturday.
