We first discussed contingency plans in case of a snowstorm. The instructor told students they should check the blog before coming to class. In addition, we discussed use of Blackboard or wiziq to replace coming to class under hazardous conditions. In the event of no parking spaces, the instructor took the names of two students and will call them if shut out of a space. These students should have their cell phones on until the instructor arrives.
Next the instructor distributed a handout for The Tower advertising project. The assignment calls for students to call on a potential client until they get an ad. Once they have the commitment for an ad, they can then design their ad and get it placed with the newspaper. They are then finished with this assignment for the semester. Students who do not get an ad will keep trying until they get one or it is the end of the semester.
At this class, the instructor explained the Form A and the coupon layout. At a future class she will show students how to spec out the ad for the graphic designer to complete.
In addition, we went around the room and each student told who their first three advertising choices were. The instructor made a list and it will be linked from this post sometime in the next day or so.
At the end of the class, the instructor outlined an idea for a project involving Superbowl commericals. Different assignments will be available. For example, we need approximately 10 people to locate a Superbowl commercial at youtube and tell the instructor which one they want to work with. Their assignment will be to research the advertising trade journals for how this commercial did for that particular advertiser. We need a person to tape only the commercials during the Superbowl, and one student volunteered for that part of the assignment.
To Do for Next Class:
Read Ch. 1 if your book has arrived.
Locate Superbowl commercial
Make phone calls to obtain advertising person for potential client
