To All Students Looking for Topics for Speeches and Papers

I am working on the topics list. There will be many more added, so check back.

Writing 102 Saturday 9-12:15

The instructor handed back the writing samples.

Next we brought up our software:  Lester book, writershelp, a Microsoft Word document and the blog. The instructor posted a link to a .ppt at the blog and we went through it to learn the uses of the semicolon. We also covered coordinating conjunctions (BOYSFAN words) and CS (comma splices).

We went through the .ppt and learned to write sentences with semicolons.

Next we did work with the MLA Works Cited. Students exchanged papers and we partially corrected them. We corrected for format, but did not do the individual citations.

During the last part of the class, the instructor reviewed students' writing samples for possible research paper topics. Students who need to decide on a topic are to email the instructor for help in refining and narrowing their subject.

To Do for Next Class:

Gather 10 sources for the research paper and put them in the form of an Annotated Works Cited. This means the student must write a summary paragraph for each citation.

Make corrections on the five works cited that were corrected in class.

Read Ch. 2 in Leseter.

Some students need to do the following:

Obtain a tutor at the ALC and tell them help is needed with sentence structure. Bring the name of the tutor to the next class.

Re-write the writing sample in simple sentences with Subject, Verb, and Object designated.

Do exercises at writershelp:  subject-verb agreement, sentence fragments, and run ons.

Speech Critical MWF

We went over MLA citation work. Students exchanged papers and the instructor showed two types of citations (online newspaper) and a print magazine.

The instructor distributed outlines for defining the problem and problem/solution. She discussed the order of presentations and the length of each one.

She advised students they will be applying concepts from the chapter (16) to what they observed going on in their groups.

On Febr. 4, we will have practice sessions and recordings. On Febr. 7 we will start the presentations and have two on that date. The remainder will be on Febr. 9 and 11.

Students met with their groups to work out recording details and order of presentation.

To Do for Next Class:

Obtain three more sources and add them to the Annotated Works Cited. The Works Cited will be checked in at the next class.
Prepare for upcoming quiz (date undetermined) on Ch. 16

Speech Critical 1402 Tuesday-Friday

The instructor handed out problem/solution outlines. The defining the problem out line is found on this blog in another post. She went over the speaking order and times of the speeches that are part of the group symposium.

The instructor recorded points for students who had their outlines with in-text citations and a Works Cited. There were three potential points.

Students met with their groups to work out recording details and to discuss content they had turned up in their research.

Presentations will start on Friday, Febr.4, so have index cards available. We will be discussing transferring the outline to key words on Tuesday.

Students must obtain a MLA/APA citation guide. Soon students will be asked to bring the guide to class.

To Do for Next Class:

Read half of Ch. 1 before Tues., Febr. 1
Study for 5-question quiz on Ch. 16, groups, which is on Febr. 4
Test your phone for recording, as students will be doing a practice session next Tues., Febr. 1

HTML/XHTML

We read the syllabus and the instructor provided hard copies of it and the activities sheet.

We formed pairs for interviews and each student introduced another person in the class. We learned what students hoped to learn from the class to purpose their various objectives and interests.

The instructor showed students the link for the book and told them about the book and why she chose it for the class. She also talked about the O'Reilly book, which she recommended students order after they have experience with the basics of HTML/XHTML.

The links assignment was handed out (hard copy).

To Do for Next Class:

We welcomed four new students to our class. The four students started their own group for the symposium and will be discussing problems that have arisen with the use of social media.

We worked on MLA citation. Students brought their annotated works cited and traded with another student. The instructor put two examples of citations on the overhead projector and we checked and corrected them. Then we returned the papers. Students should hold on to this exercise because at some point it will be handed in for credit.

The instructor alerted students to speech dates and at a future class, students will be asked to commit to a date.

For those who are defining the problem, please e-mail the instructor for an outline.  Other students will follow a solution/explanation format for their speech.

To Do for Next Class:

Write outline for your section of the presentation. Do in-text citations and an annotated works cited.

Read Ch. 16 in the text

Advertising Mon.-Wed.

We first discussed contingency plans in case of a snowstorm. The instructor told students they should check the blog before coming to class. In addition, we discussed use of Blackboard or wiziq to replace coming to class under hazardous conditions. In the event of no parking spaces, the instructor took the names of two students and will call them if shut out of a space. These students should have their cell phones on until the instructor arrives.

Next the instructor distributed a handout for The Tower advertising project. The assignment calls for students to call on a potential client until they get an ad. Once they have the commitment for an ad, they can then design their ad and get it placed with the newspaper. They are then finished with this assignment for the semester. Students who do not get an ad will keep trying until they get one or it is the end of the semester.

At this class, the instructor explained the Form A and the coupon layout. At a future class she will show students how to spec out the ad for the graphic designer to complete.

In addition, we went around the room and each student told who their first three advertising choices were. The instructor made a list and it will be linked from this post sometime in the next day or so.

At the end of the class, the instructor outlined an idea for a project involving Superbowl commericals. Different assignments will be available. For example, we need approximately 10 people to locate a Superbowl commercial at youtube and tell the instructor which one they want to work with. Their assignment will be to research the advertising trade journals for how this commercial did for that particular advertiser.  We need a person to tape only the commercials during the Superbowl, and one student volunteered for that part of the assignment.

To Do for Next Class:

Read Ch. 1 if your book has arrived.
Locate Superbowl commercial
Make phone calls to obtain advertising person for potential client

Writershelp Exercises

I'll be posting two hours of work using writershelp. This will give us two hours of credit toward our make-up class.

Second hour:

Be sure "Table of contents" is selected on the upper left.

Go to "Writing About Literature."

Read: "Integrating quotations from a literary work."

Then scroll down to "Sample Literature Papers" and read Margaret Peel's "Opposing Voices in Ballad of the Landlord."

Then go to the upper left and click "Exercises." Click "Academic Writing" and read "thesis statements in literature papers." Having your own poetry paper open on the screen, evaluate your literary thesis statement according to the questions as you progress through them.

Add this exercise to the Word doc mentioned below and turn it in.

Be prepared to discuss how your thesis statement compared to what you learned in this exercise when you are in a small group discussion.

--------------

The first hour is to do comma work. Click the "exercises" tab on the upper left and do the first six exercises under punctuation. They are:

Major uses of the comma 1
Major uses of the comma 2
All uses of the comma
Misuses of the comma 1
Misuses of the comma 2
The semicolon and the comma 1
The semicolon and the comma 2
The colon, the semicolon, and the comma

On Monday, I will go over the comma rules, particularly coordinating conjunctions (BOYSFAN words) and restrictive and nonrestrictive clauses. In addition, we will go through a semicolon Powerpoint.

Because I'm giving you the instruction after you answer the question, I'm not concerned with the score and will give you a checkmark credit for doing the above. To prove you did the exercises, though, copy and paste your score and put it in a word document and turn it in on Monday. You will have eight scores that will count as checkmarks.

I will have a comma quiz, however, on Monday. That one will be for a grade.

I will be posting another hour's worth of exercises here later.

Snow E-Mail

I just sent this to all students:

Just looking at the snow coming down as steadily as it is and also looking at the weather reports, I don't think it's smart to go out in this weather.

I am going to cancel class today because I think they will cancel it anyway.

I will call the school and see if we can get a classroom for tomorrow. If too many people can't make it tomorrow, then possibly next Saturday or by adding an hour on to each class for next week.  Another possibility is a  week from this Saturday.

Please click reply and tell me your preference on when to hold this class.

Tuesday, January 4, 2011

Writing 102 Tuesday 8:30-12:15

In our first hour, we discussed poetry and the poetry paper. The instructor put various past projects by students on the overhead doc cam.

In the second hour, we discussed the research paper. The instructor talked to students about point 1, which will be due tomorrow. Point 1 includes a definition of terms and a literature review. Students referred to their research and circled terms for which they thought definition would be needed.

The instructor highlighted parts of writershelp and the Lester online book that would be useful to students as they work with their research.

The instructor passed out a date schedule which covered the poetry and research paper due dates. It will be posted here later.

We then went into the drama section of the class. Students were divided into groups and the purpose was to form a team to define the terms. The instructor outlined the rules of the exercise. We went through terms A-F and our next round will be on Thursday. For Thursday, students should know the terms G-M.

After working on drama, we went back to the research paper and the instructor put research papers on the overhead document cam. Students were able to read parts of them.

She discussed the difference between primary sources and secondary sources.

To do for next class:

Write two pages of definition of terms and the literature review. It needs to have internal text citations and a Works Cited. These documents may be "rough."

Read some of the drama terms G-M.

Prepare for tomorrow's writing, with will be the poetry paper, which will include the explication.

Writing 102 Monday 8:30-12:15

We worked on Web citation. The instructor put a checklist from Hacker on the overhead projector and showed students how to use the list to retrieve the pertinent information for their citation. Students exchanged their papers with a colleague who corrected the citation.

The instructor said she would post an example of a current correct MLA citation as the Hacker book was out of date. We used the green library update to bring the example up to date on the doc cam. Example:

Jenkins, Henry. "Bearings." MIT Communications Forum. MIT. 19 Feb. 2002. Web. 16 June 2005.

You will also find examples at writershelp.com.

Next we did the syllabus quiz.

We went to the computer room to work on the poetry assignment. Students looked for literary criticism for their poetry movement/school or genre.

The instructor checked in the five sources for the research paper and the two sources for the poetry paper.

Next class:

Read first chapter in Lester book

Add sources to the research paper annotated works cited

Add sources to the poetry paper works cited
