ENG102 Sat., 9-12:15

We found the bookstore failed to order the books and access cards for our class, probably due to the fact that the employee the instructor ordered them from is no longer with the company.  The instructor went to the bookstore and found another employee who is willing to get the materials for the class.
The new orders should take place this week.

We worked on topics today. Students submitted areas of interest and using the book, we took the topic to the area of academic subject. The instructor assigned students the job of obtaining 10 sources from the academic databases and the internet. They are to be formatted in MLA style next week.

In addition, we chose poetry genres and put them on a chart.  See link at right.

We were unable to work with writershelp today because of the bookstore problem.

Students new to the class this week will get an extra week to work on this project.

Next week come to class with an Annotated Works Cited with 10 sources and two pieces of research on your poetry genre.

Friday:

We were supposed to give our introductions today, but too many people had written out paragraphs instead of a key word outline. Students are writing their outlines over the weekend and we will do the introductions at the next class.

Instead, today we discussed and did an exercise with "I-thou" and "I-it."

Students wrote out answers to questions and the instructor will read them and select some for discussion next week.

On Monday we are doing the introductions.

Introductions:  we did all the intros except for students new to the class. We will have two more intros at the next class. Students turned in a typed outline for their interview.

At the next class, the instructor will show students the Hippocratic Oath assignment.

Introductions

Assignment for ENG102 Have for 9/19 class

1. Come to class with three topics for a research paper. It should be a topic that interests you.

a. Not OK: steroids, diseases, marijuana legalization, abortion

b. Preferred: a topic from your major that you would like to explore. A current event that could be analyzed (example from last semester: Occupy movement). A social development, such as how self-control is a factor in student and adult success. Who succeeds and why: See Malcolm Gladwell’s site for ideas (http://www.gladwell.com/)

2. Read play paper at blog “Sample Drama Paper from 102 “ (sixth or seventh from bottom of Links section)

3. Purchase book and access card for web site. Bring receipt for 25 class participation points.

Health Communication

We checked in receipts and the instructor recorded 25 CPPs for students who had a receipt.

Students were paired and were given the list of questions for an introduction. Students did the intros and at the end of the class, the instructor told how to do the outline:

Intro (catch attention)

First point (could be college major, job the student would like to have after graduation, etc.)

Second point (could be family and home life)

Third point (could be hobbies, interests, travel, etc.)

Conclusion:  make the name clear to the other students in the room

Reading:  While there is no assigned reading for this week, students who want to lighten their work load for next week can begin reading Ch. 1 in each book.

 Thursday:

The instructor showed students the difference in graphic file formats:  bitmap and vector. She explain pixels and why print needs a higher resolution than digital. Students did paired introductions

Assignment
1.    Interview your partner and write a 3-4 minute introduction speech before Thursday’s class. Use the questions on the reverse of this assignment sheet. Come prepared to deliver at the next class. Type (double space) an outline based on what you learned about informative speaking in 1402. At the top of the outline, entitle it “(Your name interviewing your partner’s name). Outlines will be turned in and will not be returned. Practice the introduction at least once.
2.    Read the graphic file handout. When you visit various web sites, take a look at the photo file types (right clickview image info  in Firefox). Note the sizes of the photographs and the file types. Try to find a .jpg, a .gif and a .png. Do you notice that certain files are used under certain types of circumstances? Check a variety of sites.
3.    Reading assignment is Ch. 2, “Identity and Image Strategy”
