Health Communication M-W, 6-7:15

We looked at the debate and analyzed the body language. 

After that students were given a benchmark to see how many nonverbal communication terms they knew. The instructor walked around to look at answers to get an idea of how to gauge the level of instruction. 

Last thing we did was read an article on medical doctors and nonverbal communication. The article had been published at The Well at The New York Times and was written by physician.

Wednesday

Continuing the key concepts from Ch. 3 on perception, we watched the video examples from the text DVD.

We then did an exercise whose purpose was to help students understand how perceptions are formed (when meeting a new person).

One item that emerged in the process of discussion after the exercise was that women were better than men at figuring out a conversational partner's preferences for what the other person might do with leisure time, etc.

For next class:

We will check in Ch. 5 and miscellaneous workbook chapters that students have completed.

There may be a .ppt on emotions or there may be a pair/share.


Monday

We worked from Ch. 3 on perception.

The instructor put terms from the chapter on the board that were about perception.

Students reviewed the terms in their book.

The instructor then played an example of the term at work from a video.

We discussed the term.

On Wednesday, we will finish three terms and do an exercise that will help students understand how others perceive us.

Students should be reading and filling out the workbook for Ch. 5. We will check workbooks on Friday, as usual.

Writing102, Sat. 9 a.m.-12:15 p.m.

We reviewed thesis statements and points that students had prepared for this class. We looked at the  on the overhead projector.

We went to the lab and students worked on MLA research exercises on writershelp while the instructor reviewed Annotated Works cited and thesis statements/points.

The instructor checked in the work for this week:  poetry paper (2 pages) and additional sources for the research .and poetry papers.

She informed the class about the Wed. class reaction to theatre choice.

Next week:

Write Point 1 of the research paper and turn it in with Annotated Works Cited. Do internal text citations.

Read Poetry chapter posted in links section at blog. There will be a test.

Students turned in their thesis statements and we made copies of them and critiqued them in class. The thesis statements were critiqued using points made in Lester.

Thursday

Students are to bring their laptops to enter questions at surveymonkey. The idea is for students to be able to confer with each other about the construction of different types of questions.

The instructor will review student market research questions at this session

Here is the content for the evaluation sheet that will be used for the market research presentations:


Did the presenter synthesize the market research findings and recognize the most salient point?

Is this point presented up front?

Did the presenter transform numbers into easily understood graphics?

Did the audience walk away with a clear understanding of what the presenter's point was?

We finished the worksheet on market research questionnaires.

We went through a .ppt on Ch. 7 and wrote newspaper copy in the classroom.

Wednesday

Because of the presidential debates tonight, we will take one class to examine the body language of the presidential candidates (note: this is the topic for next week--see readings). In addition, we will watch a film about Obama's communication techniques and also a video on his healthcare program.

There will also be a handout on the debates:  when and what dates they take place and who is debating and on what topics.  There is also a worksheet for the communication video.

To Do for Next Class:

Watch debates, if possible.Come prepared for discussion on communication points listed on worksheet.
Watch Romney and evaluate his nonverbal communication on the same points as on the Obama worksheet.

Monday

We took an open book exam on Chapter 2 of PsychoSocial.  We corrected the exams in class. Students looked at their paper and wrote a note to the instructor if they disagreed with how it was corrected. The instructor will log the grades in and let students know about any discrepancies.

For Wednesday, we are to be reading Ch. 3 in both books.

Monday
We went over the negative self-talk worksheets. Students will turn them in on Friday.

The instructor explained the group exercise for Friday. Students are to collect at least one ad for Friday's class.
She also explained why TV advertising is the 24/7 "feel bad" machine.
We watched the film from the Dove Campaign for Real Beauty.

Because of the debates, on Wed. we will watch a film on Obama's interpersonal communication skills.

On Friday we will do the group exercise with advertising.

Students should be reading Ch's 3 & 4 and doing the workbook. We will be checking in the workbooks on Friday.
