1.      Come to class with three topics for a research paper. It should be a topic that interests you.

a.       Not OK:  steroids, diseases, marijuana legalization, abortion

b.      Preferred: a topic from your major that you would like to explore. A current event that could be analyzed (example from last semester:  Occupy movement). A social development, such as how self-control is a factor in student and adult success. Who succeeds and why:  See Malcolm Gladwell’s site for ideas (http://www.gladwell.com/)

2.      Read play paper at blog “Sample Drama Paper from 102 “ (sixth or seventh from bottom of Links section)

3.      Choose a poetry genre by reading the two links at poets.org:  Poets & Poetry à”Essays and Interviews” à “Schools & Movements”   and “Forms & Techniques.”

4.      Purchase book and access card for web site. Bring receipt for 25 class participation points.

Thursday:


We went over the deadline dates for The Tower. Three students volunteered to ask about early "welcome back" ads for certain clients. Those students are Anthony, Joanne, and Julissa. The isntructor will email these three students the rate card this evening. In addition, students turned in three possibilities for people they would like to talk to about an ad.
The isntructor picked up receipts for the book.
Next we worked on introductions. Each student interviewed another for a three-minute introduction at the next class. Students should turn in their outlines at the next class. They can be handwritten or typed, but must be organized. We will do the introductions at that time.
During the last part of the lcass the instructor gave students five reading questions for Ch. 1. Students who have the book should turn in their answers to the questions next week. Students who ordered the book mail order can turn the questions in as late as Sept. 20.
To do for next class:
Read Ch. 1 and answer the five questions
Approach an advertiser, if you volunteered to do so
Put finishing touches on your introduction. Practice it to make sure it is 3".

Research papers and poetry evaluations will be returned today at our last class.

We will convert our MLA research paper into an APA paper. Students will then have two models of papers on which to base their future academic research writing.

Facebook and Google Gone in Five Years?

Drawing on your experience as person in the 18-24 year-old age bracket (if you are not in this bracket, draw on the experience of your children), the first generation to experience smart phones, write a reaction paper (1-2 pages) to this author's position.

Use one additional source and document it using MLA style.
